The meaning of things lies not in the things themselves but in our attitude towards them.
Antoin de Saint-Exupery
Before recovery, I used to go through my days judging things as “good” or “bad”. For example, if I fell ill, I saw that as “bad.” When I was recognized and rewarded for a job well done, I saw that as “good.” Then, I would go about doing whatever I could to maximize the “good” events that happened and fix the “bad” events. I realize now that when I did this, I wasn't accepting the world as it was. The longer I am in recovery, the less and less I see things as “good” or “bad” but instead see things as the universe conspiring to help me – in sometimes unorthodox ways. These days, when I fall ill, I do not see it as bad but instead see it as the universe telling me I need to take a break and take care of myself. I am grateful for these little reminders from my Higher Power because it reminds me that I am loved and looked after.
A meditation for March 29, 2013.
